The AI Cold War: China Is Closing the Gap With the United States

The technological gap between China and the United States in artificial intelligence is shrinking faster than expected. According to Stanford University’s latest AI report, Chinese AI models are now approaching the performance levels of leading American systems.

Back in 2023, GPT-4 outperformed Chinese competitors by nearly 300 benchmark points. By early 2026, that difference had fallen to only 39 points, showing how quickly Beijing has advanced in the global AI race.

Unlike the American system, which relies heavily on private companies and startups, China uses a centralized strategy involving major tech giants such as Huawei, Tencent, Alibaba, and Baidu working closely with the government.

At the same time, tensions between Washington and Beijing continue to escalate. The White House recently accused several Chinese AI companies of carrying out large-scale cyber operations to illegally obtain American data and models.

Artificial intelligence is now considered one of the most important strategic technologies in the world, influencing defense, cybersecurity, finance, healthcare, and even political influence campaigns.

The growing rivalry between the two superpowers is also putting pressure on Europe, which remains heavily dependent on foreign technologies and cloud infrastructure.

As the AI race intensifies, many experts believe the world is entering a new technological Cold War where algorithms may become just as important as military power.
