Tesla launches robotaxi pilot in Austin

On June 22, 2025, Tesla officially rolled out its highly anticipated robotaxi pilot in Austin, Texas. The program launched with a fleet of about 10–20 modified Model Y vehicles, operating within a defined geographic boundary in South Congress. Each ride costs a flat $4.20 and runs daily from 6 a.m. to midnight. Despite the "driverless" label, every car has a human safety monitor in the passenger seat, ready to take over only if needed.

Tesla is relying solely on its Full Self-Driving (FSD) camera-based system, not using sensors like LiDAR or radar used by rivals such as Waymo. Early riders—mostly influencers and employees—reported a smooth and comfortable experience, though some noted sudden stops near law enforcement zones.

Regulatory conditions in Texas facilitated the pilot, though new rules demanding Level 4 autonomy permits take effect in September. Investors responded positively: Tesla stock jumped roughly 10–11% following the announcement. However, analysts from UBS caution that the robotaxi opportunity may already be priced into the stock.

Elon Musk hailed this as “the culmination of a decade’s work,” and Tesla plans to expand the pilot to 1,000 vehicles and into cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles. Still, competing companies like Waymo remain ahead in autonomous ride volume, and safety, transparency, and regulatory protections continue to be closely monitored.
