U.S.-Iran Ceasefire Holds Amidst Tensions at NATO Summit

The Hague – June 25, 2025 — Israel and Iran are holding to a shaky ceasefire after a burst of military strikes earlier this month. It’s been quiet in terms of firepower for now, but no one’s calling it peace just yet.

U.S. President Donald Trump said this week that Washington would begin direct talks with Tehran soon — and called it a victory. “This is the start of real peace,” he claimed. But many observers remain skeptical, especially with Iran’s nuclear ambitions still very much on the table.

Earlier this month, U.S. and Israeli forces hit Iranian nuclear facilities. In response, Iran fired missiles at U.S. bases in Qatar. The exchange has paused for now, but it wouldn’t take much for things to spiral again.

Meanwhile, NATO leaders are meeting in The Hague for a summit centered on defense budgets and long-term strategy. One idea gaining traction — mostly pushed by the U.S. — is for member nations to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035. President Trump strongly supports it. Spain and a few others aren’t so sure, arguing that effective defense doesn’t always require massive spending. The alliance is also reaffirming its support for Ukraine as it continues to fend off Russian attacks.

Discussions include more weapons, more logistics, and what kind of long-term support NATO can realistically sustain. With pressure building on multiple fronts — from the Middle East to Eastern Europe — the choices made this week could set the tone for the months, and possibly years, ahead.
