UK boosts quantum computing with £500M injection

On June 23, 2025, the UK government unveiled plans to invest more than £500 million in quantum computing over the next four years—part of a bigger £670 million commitment across a decade. This move aims to strengthen both national security and economic resilience by building sovereign capabilities in a field dominated by global powers. The investment will support the National Quantum Computing Centre and complement an earlier £100 million set aside for five research hubs.

Industry experts, including Gerald Mullally (Oxford Quantum Circuits), emphasize quantum technology's potential to revolutionize secure communications, medical imaging, and materials discovery. Meanwhile, regulatory concerns are also driving this funding—especially after several UK firms were acquired by US companies this month.

The announcement confirms the UK's ambition to emerge among the quantum elite—on par with global rivals and major tech players. The investment also aligns with wider discussions about preserving technological sovereignty in critical sectors like AI and green energy .

Although still in early stages, this accelerated funding could help the UK avoid falling behind in what’s quickly becoming a global quantum race. By nurturing homegrown talent and research, Britain aims to leverage the coming wave of quantum breakthroughs in both the public and private sectors.
